CBD and HHC in pregnancy

CBD and HHC in pregnancy - hanfplatz

CBD (cannabidiol) has been trendy for a long time. Also on the rise is HHC – another cannabinoid that is on the rise. More and more people are discovering these substances for themselves. But can they also be taken during pregnancy without worry?

Austria: HHC ban from March 23, 2023

On March 23, 2023, the Austrian Ministry of Health included HHC in the regulation on new psychoactive substances (NPS). This means that the production and trading of synthetic HHC is prohibited in Austria.

To the regulation

What is CBD? Can it be taken during pregnancy?

Cannabidiol is a cannabinoid that occurs naturally in hemp. Unlike THC, the psychoactive effect is very slight or non-existent. There is no feeling of intoxication when using it. For this reason, CBD is also classified as a legal dietary supplement in Germany.

The cannabinoid interacts with the endocannabinoid system , which is responsible for various vital functions in the human body. Among other things, it controls the immune system, memory, appetite and mood. In principle , CBD is considered harmless for adults . The WHO also confirmed this as part of a comprehensive investigation. There are hardly any side effects.

But is it also safe for pregnant women to take?

This question cannot be answered clearly. It has not yet been possible to check whether cannabidiol is also safe for the unborn child . In addition, legal CBD products also contain minimal amounts of THC, which even remains in breast milk for a certain period of time. When using CBD products, an unborn child could also be exposed to this substance.

But what does science say about this?

To date, hardly any studies have been carried out on the use of CBD products in pregnant women. There are only testimonials online from women who have taken CBD oil during pregnancy and breastfeeding. According to the reports , there were no negative effects on the children . However, such statements are not valid. Expectant mothers should therefore always keep in mind that everything taken during pregnancy will also be taken by the unborn child. If the use of CBD products is not absolutely necessary , it is better to avoid it.

What is HHC? Is it safe to use during pregnancy?

HHC is becoming increasingly popular. It is a relative of THC, but is a relatively minor cannabinoid. It also occurs naturally in hemp. However, the quantities are so low that it is not worth extracting. Therefore, it is produced chemically in the laboratory from hemp-derived CBD . Although it is not technically THC, the effect is similar in high doses. So far, specific effects and side effects are only known from user reports. Since there are hardly any scientific studies on HHC and some of them contradict each other, taking it is not recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding women.
