Hemp and vegan nutrition

Hemp and vegan nutrition - hanfplatz

There is no question: a vegan diet has many health benefits. With the right know-how, vegans don't have to worry about nutritional deficiencies. Only vitamin B 12 should be taken regularly as a supplement if you follow a strict vegan lifestyle. Other vitamins, minerals, trace elements and proteins are also sufficiently contained in plant foods. One plant that particularly stands out due to its versatile uses is hemp. Because hemp has numerous valuable ingredients to offer and can be wonderfully integrated into a complete vegan diet.

Hemp as a plant-based protein source

Proteins are essential for building muscle and other important body functions and must largely be consumed through your diet. Legumes, nuts, grains and pseudo-grains contain lots of plant proteins . But hemp seeds in particular have now made a name for themselves as an excellent source of plant-based protein. The hemp protein, which is abundant in hemp seeds, has a particularly favorable amino acid profile and high bioavailability. It is therefore broken down and converted quite easily by the organism. Hemp protein contains all the amino acids that the body needs every day. Hemp seeds are therefore considered a particularly valuable source of plant proteins.

Ideal for a vegan diet: cold-pressed hemp seed oil

The dark oil, which is ideally created by manually pressing hemp seeds, has a high proportion of the essential omega-3 fatty acids . These have, among other things, a beneficial effect on the cardiovascular system and blood lipid levels. Because omega-3 fatty acids reduce the storage of fats and lower triglyceride levels. They are also needed to build important tissue hormones and cell membranes. Omega-3 fatty acids are also said to strengthen the immune system, have anti-inflammatory properties and improve the flow properties of the blood. In addition to the important omega-3 fatty acids, hemp seed oil also contains a certain amount of omega-6 fatty acids. The special thing about the oil made from cold-pressed hemp seeds: The ratio between omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids is around 3:1 and is therefore almost ideal!

The use of hemp products in vegan cuisine

Hemp seeds can be used as a topping to spice up morning muesli, salads and soups . However, the seeds should not be roasted beforehand as valuable ingredients can be lost. If possible, the high-quality hemp seed oil should also not be heated. It is ideal for salad dressings and plant-based raw food cuisine. Hemp milk is also being used more and more often. It is ideal as a healthy alternative to cow's milk.

Greenish hemp tea, which consists of the dried parts of the industrial hemp plant, is less well known.

On the other hand, protein-rich hemp flour is very popular. This can be used for baking and cooking, but also for refining smoothies and vegan shakes.

The hemp plant is often used in vegan cuisine. It's not just their health value that makes them a jack-of-all-trades for the vegan diet. The pleasant, slightly nutty aroma of many hemp products also contributes to the hemp plant being so popular in plant-based health cuisine.
